It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Nicolaas (Nick) Vrijland, who passed away peacefully on 2nd November 2026.

Together with his wife Rowena, Nick gave the people of Cranleigh an extraordinary gift in Knowle Park. But to those of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him, he was much more than a generous benefactor. He was a friend, a source of inspiration and the driving force behind the creation of a very special place.

Nick’s ambition was for Knowle Park to be much more than a beautiful green space. He wanted to protect and enhance its natural environment, creating a haven for wildlife while bringing people together. He understood the importance of friendship, human connection and a sense of belonging, and believed that time spent in nature could enrich lives and help combat loneliness.

Above all, he wanted both people and nature to thrive.

Through his vision and generosity, Nick has left Cranleigh a remarkable gift, a place that will enrich the lives of local people for generations to come.

We will miss him enormously, not only for all that he made possible, but for the person he was. His kindness, integrity and unwavering commitment to the park will remain an inspiration to everyone involved in its future.

As Trustees, we are determined to honour his memory by continuing to care for and nurture Knowle Park, ensuring it remains a welcoming and much-loved place for the whole community.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Rowena and the entire Vrijland family at this incredibly sad time.
