Be the person who looks after Knowle Park, every day

Knowle Park is a much loved country park and nature reserve at the heart of Cranleigh. It is a place people walk, play, volunteer, reflect and reconnect with nature.

We’re now looking for a Park Ranger to take day to day care of the park and help us protect and improve it for the community, today and into the future.

This is a practical, hands-on role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in doing things properly, and values being part of something that genuinely matters.

About the role

As Park Ranger, you’ll be responsible for the everyday care, management and appearance of Knowle Park. Your work will help ensure the park is safe, welcoming and well looked after in all seasons.

The role combines practical land management, volunteer support, public engagement and health and safety oversight. No two days are quite the same. One day you might be improving paths or carrying out woodland work, the next leading a volunteer group, dealing with drainage issues after heavy rain, or helping prepare the site for an event.

You will be a visible and approachable presence in the park, working with visitors, volunteers, contractors and trustees to keep the park running smoothly.

What you’ll be doing

You will carry out regular maintenance across the park, including paths, entrances, fencing, gates, signage, benches and bins. You will identify issues such as fallen trees, erosion, drainage problems or damage and deal with these directly where possible, or arrange contractors when needed.

You will lead and support conservation and land management work such as woodland management, coppicing, scrub clearance, invasive species control and replanting, in line with agreed plans and seasonal considerations.

You will plan and lead weekday volunteer sessions, creating a safe, supportive and positive environment for people giving their time to the park.

You will support the Trust’s events programme, helping with preparation, on the day support and clear up. This will occasionally involve weekend working, with time off in lieu provided.

You will help manage health and safety across the site through regular inspections, risk assessments, record keeping and basic compliance checks.

Who this role is for

This role would suit someone practical, reliable and comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.

You might already work in countryside management, conservation, estates or grounds maintenance, or you may be looking for a role that brings together hands on work, people and purpose.

You will need sound judgement, good communication skills and the confidence to work independently while being part of a small, committed team.

A genuine interest in the natural environment and community spaces is essential.

Hours and contract

£18,751.91 per year

This is a part time role, 24 hours per week, based mainly on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Some flexibility is required to support events and seasonal pressures.

The role may be offered on either an employed or self employed basis, which will be discussed at interview.

A DBS check is required for this role. A full driving licence is preferable.

Why work with Knowle Park Trust

This role offers the chance to make a visible difference, to take real ownership of a place, and to be part of a supportive team working for long term public benefit.
